About Kanelbullens Dag

Kanelbullens Dag, or Cinnamon Bun Day, is a beloved Swedish holiday celebrated each year on October 4. It was established in 1999 by Hembakningsrådet (the Home Baking Council) to honor Sweden’s long-standing tradition of fika, the cultural practice of pausing to enjoy coffee and a sweet treat with friends or colleagues.

The cinnamon bun, or kanelbulle, has been a staple in Swedish baking since the 1920s and has become one of the country’s most iconic pastries. Kanelbullens Dag not only celebrates this classic treat but also highlights Sweden’s rich baking heritage and the warmth of gathering over food. On this day, bakeries, cafés, and households across Sweden (and in many other countries with Swedish communities) bake and enjoy cinnamon buns, often in large quantities. The celebration is about more than just pastries — it’s about connection, tradition, and sharing a simple pleasure that brings people together.
