Young Diplomats Summer Institute 2025: Empowering Arizona Youth to Lead Globally

This June, Global Ties Arizona brought together 34 high school students from 19 different schools across Greater Phoenix for an immersive week-long program at the Young Diplomats Summer Institute, designed to prepare future leaders by deepening their understanding of diplomacy, global challenges, and civic engagement. Hosted in partnership with the Thunderbird School of Global Management, the program introduces students to diplomacy by providing them with the tools, knowledge, and experiences needed to understand, engage with, and shape a rapidly evolving world. Through sessions focused on peacebuilding, sustainability, public health, and leadership—including a memorable meeting with Phoenix Mayor Kate Gallego—participants expanded their worldviews and developed the skills to lead with empathy and vision in an interconnected world

A Global Program, Rooted in Arizona

Participants deepened their awareness of Arizona’s expanding influence in global affairs and the vital role that active civic engagement plays in shaping international developments —through practical workshops, collaborative discussions, and immersive simulations.

Throughout the week, students took part in a range of sessions designed to enhance their:

  • Knowledge of global issues & how they impact Arizona

  • Ability to engage with and learn from global leaders

The Young Diplomats Institute perfectly aligns with Global Ties Arizona’s commitment to citizen diplomacy,” said Suzanne Lawrence, a retired U.S. State Department diplomat and mentor in the program. ‘The students who participate are future leaders interested in building bridges across cultures, solving complex problems, and engaging with the global community.

The program focused on five core thematic areas:

People & Culture | Peace & Conflict | Environmental Sustainability | Global Public Health | Global Economy

These topics were explored through the lens of real-world issues, supported by mentorship from global experts, and enriched through collaboration with fellow young leaders.
