GTAZ Welcomes Kevin Cassidy of the International Labour Organization to Discuss the Future of Work

Global Ties Arizona, in partnership with Arizona State University’s Sandra Day O'Connor College of Law, hosted Kevin Cassidy of the United Nations’ International Labour Organization as part of the World Affairs Councils of America's 2023 Engage America: Collaborating for a Better World of Work to address global workplace trends and their impact on the Greater Phoenix labor market. The event featured two panel sessions highlighting women's employment in the post-COVID era and the use of AI in workplaces and hiring practices.

Mr. Cassidy addressed crucial economic and social issues affecting countries worldwide, including:

  • The role of technology in driving business transformation over the next five years

  • The significance of Environmental, Social, and Governance metrics in consumer and investor decision-making

  • Global youth employment and workforce preparation for the future

The first panel session, "Women at Work Today: Employment Gains and Obstacles," was introduced by Clare Felix, Manager of Community Engagement Strategy at the Salt River Project. Panelists Vanessa Garcia (Performant Scout), Ashley Kelly (J.P. Morgan Chase), and Marian Zapata-Rossa (Snell & Wilmer) discussed:

  • Strategies for women in leadership roles and navigating traditionally male-dominated spaces

  • Legal protections and gaps affecting women in the workplace

  • Overcoming challenges in corporate America and the importance of mentorship

Nick Enoch from the Arizona Labor and Employment Relations Association introduced the final panel, "AI in the Workplace: Challenges and Opportunities," featuring Dr. Charla Griffy-Brown (Thunderbird School of Global Management), Minky Kernacs (Mercurio Analytics), and Melissa Shingles (Littler Mendelson). The panelists explored:

  • The impact of AI and machine learning on the workforce

  • Approaches companies are taking to address job displacement caused by AI

  • Evolving regulations and policies in response to AI technologies
