Join Global Ties Arizona for the Longwave Radio Run, a one-of-a-kind self-guided running experience celebrating more than 100 years of wireless communication between Sweden and the United States.
The 10.8-mile distance was carefully chosen in honor of Sweden’s historic Grimeton Radio Station SAQ, whose longwave transmission measures 17.4 km at 17.2 kHz. It’s not a marathon, half marathon, or 10K — it’s the Longwave Radio Run, and one of the first events of its kind in the United States.
Participants will enjoy:
• A 10.8-mile self-guided run around Tempe Town Lake
• One complimentary beer after the run
• Opportunities to connect with fellow runners and community members
Schedule
8:00 a.m. — Check-in and warm-up in the parking lot next to Hundred Mile Brewing
8:30 a.m. — Run begins (route preview available upon registration)
Following the run, participants are invited to gather at Hundred Mile Brewing for post-run conversations and community connection.
Why a Longwave Radio Run?
This event commemorates over a century of wireless communication between Sweden and the United States. Sweden’s Grimeton Radio Station, built in 1925 to facilitate transatlantic communication, was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2004 for its historical and technological significance.
Proceeds from registration fees support Global Ties Arizona programming, helping connect local Arizonans with international visitors through curated exchange experiences.
