Join Global Ties Arizona for the 2025 CHINA Town Hall, an annual event in collaboration with the National Committee on U.S.-China Relations, to explore President Trump’s China policy 100 days in and its implications for the future of U.S.-China relations.

What to Expect:

The event will feature a national conversation facilitated by the National Committee on U.S.-China Relations, followed by an expert panel discussion moderated by Dr. Doug Guthrie, Professor and Executive Director of China Initiatives at Thunderbird.

Following the national discussion, our local expert panel will provide insights on U.S.-China relations under the new administration, sharing perspectives on trade, diplomacy, and global security. Attendees will have the opportunity to ask questions, share insights, and engage in meaningful dialogue.

After the event, attendees and speakers are invited to continue the discussion and network at Thunderbird Pub Night (5th floor, no-host).

Dr. Doug Guthrie

Professor & Executive Director of China Initiatives, Thunderbird School of Global Management at ASU

Doug Guthrie is an expert in international business and trade, technology and society, entrepreneurship and technology transfer, and organizational development. Guthrie uses his past experience in his teaching at ASU since he was a senior director at Apple in Shanghai, China, where he led Apple University efforts on leadership and organizational development in China. 

Guthrie is a professor and the director of China Initiatives at the Thunderbird School of Global Management. He has spent his career researching, writing, teaching and advising companies about organizational development and the Chinese economic reforms. 

He received an AB in East Asian languages (concentration in Chinese literature) from the University of Chicago and MA and PhD degrees in organizational sociology from the University of California, Berkeley. Fluent in Mandarin Chinese, he studied in Taipei, Taiwan, during his undergraduate years and conducted PhD research in Shanghai, China. He has authored and edited books, academic articles, popular articles, reports on Chinese economic reform, leadership and corporate social responsibility, and strategic economic development in American cities.

Dr. David A. Pietz

Regents Professor of Modern Chinese History, University of Arizona

David Pietz is Regents Professor of History, UNESCO Chair in Environmental History, and Director of the School for Global Studies at the University of Arizona. His research focuses on environmental and technological history of modern China with a particular focus on water management. Publications include The Yellow River: The Problem of Water in Modern China (Harvard; Cecil B. Curry Book Award), Engineering the State: The Huai River and Reconstruction in Nationalist China (Routledge), Water and Human Societies (co, editor, Palgrave), and State and Economy in Republican China (co-editor, Harvard Asia Center).

Honorable Matt Salmon

Special Advisor, Arizona State University & Former U.S. Congressman

Matt Salmon brings over four decades of distinguished experience in both the public and private sectors. With a solid foundation in telecom, Matt transitioned to a notable political career, serving four years in the Arizona State Senate followed by ten years as a U.S. Representative. During his tenure in Congress, he was an active member of the U.S. House Foreign Affairs Committee, notably serving as chairman of both the Western Hemisphere and Asia-Pacific Subcommittees. His commitment to global cooperation and human rights was further exemplified through his leadership as chairman of the Human Rights Committee at the OSCE, focusing on security and cooperation in Eastern Europe. Beyond his political and professional endeavors, Matt has demonstrated a profound dedication to humanitarian causes, notably with 25 years on the board of ChildHelp USA, a nonprofit dedicated to the prevention and treatment of child abuse as well as human trafficking. Currently, Matt is serving as a special advisor at Arizona State University on international matters.
