The Meridian International Center arranged a for a group looking at issues around Air Pollution Monitoring and Governance to visit Arizona as a part of the U.S. Department of State’s International Visitor Leadership Program (IVLP).   The visitors of this program were officers and a chairman of Air Quality Agency & National Committee on Green Development and Clean Technology. The objectives of this four-day visit were to formulate policies on air quality and to collect and share data learned in Arizona about required regulations.

The start of the trip consisted of a visit to the Arizona Department of Environmental Quality. The hosts of this event were Steve Calderon who is the Section Manager of the Vehicle Emission Control Section and John Gallegos, Unit Manager.  They coordinated a discussion including the required regulations for vehicle testing and the process to improve air quality in Arizona. The next event was a visit to the Desert Botanical Gardens, and then a meeting hosted by Warning Coordination Meteorologist of National Weather Service, Ken Waters.  Ken shared the tools used to determine air quality in Arizona.

The group then visited with the Gila River Indian Community Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ) where host , Ryan Eberle, Air Quality Program Manager, demonstrated the equipment used on the air monitoring site.

After the visit to the DEQ, visitors went to the Salt River Project in Tempe, AZ where the hosts discussed air quality in Arizona, alternatives for clean sources of power and the use of solar in the Arizona community. Visitors then had the opportunity to visit Arizona Falls to see the Arizona Canal that generates enough clean and renewable energy to power over 100 homes.

Global Ties Arizona wrapped up the trip by taking visitors to the Maricopa County Air Quality Department where visitors saw the tools used to measure pollutants and the data collected to ensure the proper representation of air quality within the county.
